To join in the birthday celebrations, we look back at the first five years of Instagram, the world’s fastest still growing social media platform.

Founded in 2010, bought by Facebook for $1billion in 2012, and this month hitting 400 million monthly active users that collectively make around 80m new uploads each day, Instagram is the most rapidly increasing social network in the world. If that’s not enough, Instagram boasts the loyalty of the younger generation who are increasingly neglecting Facebook. The latest statistics show that 73% of Instagrammers fall between 15 and 35 years old.

Most popular accounts on Instagram

Instagram has marked the day by releasing who the five most followed accounts on the platform are; which in the UK consists of three One Direction members, Gareth Bale and David Beckham; whilst, in the US, sees Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Beyonce, Ariana Grande and the ubiquitous Kim Kardashian as the most popular.

Away from celebrities, it’s interesting to note that in five years, the platform itself has barely changed in terms of layout and user experience. Small changes (video uploads, usability tweaks and direct messages) have been added, but the clear purpose of sharing and admiring images has always shone through.
